WRITE ON THE RADIO

1/07  Introduction to Write on the Radio

I think that I became a broadcaster because of my love of music. But, also because I like to write and take photographs, I wonder maybe if I'm still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up… Therefore, this column may take little twists and turns as we go along, but we will always mainly focus on the music and, hopefully, give you something to think about along the way as a bonus. Music, to me, is like a family member, and I love to share discussion of it with others.

Charlie Daniels has been invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry, at age 71. Charlie began his long road in music in the 1950's and is one of those acts at home on almost any radio format. His current album, "Deuces," is his first duet album and features guest artists Brad Paisley; The Del McCoury Band; Gretchen Wilson; Earl, Gary & Randy Scruggs; Bonnie Bramlett; Travis Tritt; Dolly Parton; Brooks & Dunn; Marty Stuart; Darius Rucker (Hootie); Brenda Lee; Vince Gill; and Montgomery Gentry. The album, containing thirteen tracks, contains everything from "Jackson" to The Band's tunes to classic CDB staples like "Long Haired Country Boy." He's at the point in his career where he can do what he wants to do musically, and this album is a good testament to simple good music by a legend and his friends. Great listening.

One of my favorite stories from this Christmas includes Patty Loveless, who has never forgotten her Kentucky roots. Having worked with her several times, I can assure you that she is the genuine article. There is a project known as the "Santa Train," which is operated by the Kingsport Tennessee Chamber of Commerce, various sponsors, and by CSX Transportation. The premise of this train each year is to operate between Kingsport and Pikeville Kentucky (Patty's hometown) and distribute toys and gifts to the less fortunate along the route. This past year was its 65th year. This special train handles tons of gifts and hands them out at stops in three states, simply for the children to have happiness at Christmas. This year marked Patty's third trip on the train. Would she have been doing it for publicity, one trip would have been it. There's more… Patty, as a child, received toys and gifts from this train, and now, at age 50, she's back helping from the other side of the coin. She even wrote a song about it a few years back, called "Santa Train." I don't know about you, but I certainly don't mind supporting an artist who gives back.

Music and artists that I'd highly recommend that you check out include Joe Nichols "Real Things," in the country genre. If you like John Mayer's style, check out Adam Hood's "6th Street." The song "Million Miles Away" is great listening. Be good to yourself; buy a cd just for you. It'll make a long day drift away.

We'll have lots of things to talk about as 2008 begins. I have several topics that I'm working on, and hopefully you'll read something that will mean something to you.

Until next time, I offer hope that this year is really great for you. Remember to spend some time with man's "other best friend"….music.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Brad Moyers, of Burnsville, an eight-year radio broadcaster, known by most as BJ Kelly on the radio, is a deeply devoted student of music of several genres. This column is a glimpse into the world of music and radio; it's history and happenings, from the perspective of someone who makes a living doing what they love.
A Braxton County native, Brad spent ten years in the US Army, working as a structure and aircraft crash rescue firefighter.  He began his radio career at WPDX in Clarksburg, and then moved to WKKW for several great years. Following a ten-year hiatus, he returned to the business he deeply loves and now works as the Production Director at Summit Media in Sutton, the parent company of The Boss 97 FM and four other stations.
With musical tastes including traditional country, classic rock, bluegrass, oldies, jam bands and the lesser known and up-and comings, Brad is a fan of the Grand Ole Opry, and enjoys doing extensive research into the history and traditions of music and radio. Other interests include creative writing, railroading, aviation, the Titanic, computers, photography, gardening and volunteering with kids. Brad blogs at “Ramblings of A Radio Hound.”
Most of his time is spent with his daughter, as his greatest pleasure is being a single parent Dad to his nine year old daughter, a fourth grader at Burnsville Elementary School. He enjoys the challenge of a long-distance relationship as well, having a partner who currently lives near Detroit.
An interactive columnist, Brad encourages and welcomes email from readers with questions, comments and suggestions. He can be reached directly at this address:        brad.moyers@yahoo.com.
