Love this story of soup making. I did something similar on my blog. It's so true that making soup is "spiritual" almost. I remember my mom making what she called end of the garden soup. I like you never make the same soup twice and it's hard to give my daughters recipes. We've been married 47 years and I have to say my soup is among my best dishes. AND STONE SOUP. How I loved that story when Capt Kangaroo read it on his shows. The kids loved it too. Talk about community. Well thank you so much for the story. Blessings! B

Although I could consider myself a Beatles afficianado for many years, I have yet to hear any of these digital remasters. Looking forward to it at some point in time.

As always, a fine piece, Brad, and the bridge between musical appreciation and the sordid economy is worth the mention.

Been trying to catch up here on what I consider an exceptional site.

Hi Joyce, I love to cook, just hate to clean up afterward. I collect cookbooks and have many, but I must say my favorite are the family cookbooks I put together with recipes gathered from family members. I hate to admit it, but I once left the insides of the turkey inside the turkey one Thanksgiving, bag and all.

I love listening to the "caws" of the crow! I think it's neat that the male bird feeds the female when she is on the nest.

I moved to the big city (Dallas, Texas) leaving the one lane dirt road that cut through my ancestral lands of Ritchie County behind along with the clan that I was born to, in 1998. Since then I have been surrounded by upwards of 8 million strangers, I have come to miss the familiarity of the hollers and bottoms, forks and licks of the Appalachian Plateau.

I also recall the making convention of those wonderful places, and feel that neighborhood and street names fail their residence when it comes to meaning and history. I remember many farms in the country that where and still are referred to by the name of the last family to live on the land: The Reecer Place, The Douglas Place, The Old Belle Place (my family farm and the two neighboring on ether side), and now The Old Simons Place. Regardless of who owns them now or if they try to rename their new home, the surrounding folks still refer to them as they have always done.

I love yard sales! And surprisingly, so does my husband. I have bought some of my favorite things at yard sales. I don't go looking for anything in particular, like a lot of people do, I go with the thought. . . "What will I find next?" It's like going on a treasure hunt.

I agree with your advice of warning your student that all authors are not truthful and also may not share the same beliefs as your family. Little ones can be so literal minded, believing everything that they see in print is true.

Loved your post and how true it is. I lived in rural Kanawha County and we had branches, hollers and forks. Many were named after my ancestors such as Haynes Branch and Edens Fork. Up the hollow where I lived most everyone was related in one way or another. It was great growing up surrounded by all your aunts, uncles and cousins. Today, it is sad, sometimes the only time families see each other is during funerals.
