"Breaking" is the term most used in
the horse industry for the training of a horse, however
breaking can have different meanings for different
people.
The first definition to "breaking a
horse" is teaching and training a horse to carry a rider
or pull a buggy (driving). Some think, however, that
"breaking a horse" is to break a horse’s spirit of being
a horse, to make them think they are smaller than you.
Since breaking sounds to some like "beating," the
word "training" is coming to be a more positive word
used to draw people to businesses in the horse industry.
So, the next time you are considering transporting
your horse to a trainer/ breaker to teach your horse and
take care of it, make sure your concept of "breaking" is
the same as the trainer’s. Ask for references, and ask
questions about their techniques to train your horse.
Check out their facility/farm first to see how trainers
will provide your horse the proper care that it needs.
