FROM THERE TO HERE
By Jim Brandenburg
February 2008 --
Frank & Judy Wolfram
While living in
Eighty-Four, Pa., Judy was reading the Sunday paper
travel section -- a whole story on "Wild and Wonderful"
West Virginia. She read every word. Frank, lived in
Fairmont for a while as a boy, and he remembered how
kind everyone was. Also, Judy’s oldest son was working
at Wheeling Downs, and Judy and Frank visited often.
They got the "Wheeling Feeling" Judy said.
Plus, Judy was pulled towards West
Virginia from the first time she heard "Take Me Home,
Country Roads."
When Frank came home from work that
day, Judy said, "We’re moving to West Virginia." Frank
said, "When?" She replied, "As soon as possible." Judy
allowed four months time for Frank to retire, and to
pack 30 years of belongings.
They found the perfect small farm in
Hundred, W.Va., and worked on it every weekend. One
morning, they got a phone call from the Hundred Fire
Department. Someone had set fire to their farm house.
The culprit was never found. "I was out of there," Judy
said. "I wasn’t going to stay where I wasn’t wanted."
Still looking, Frank and Judy found a
small farm and house in Five Forks, sold their
Pennsylvanian house, and packed up and headed south.
They have now been in West Virginia for fourteen
years and seven months, and have never looked back. "We
love it here," said Judy.
The term "Elsewherian"
was invented by former California Governor Goodwin
Knight to refer to those who hailed from anywhere but
the Golden State.

Virginia following an interesting or unique progression
