WEST VIRGINIA TRAVELERS

January 2008 - Hillbilly Haven

If you are looking for a winter weekend getaway, or a nice cozy place to hibernate for a few days, Hillbilly Haven cabins in Lewis County offer warm wooden spaces with gas fireplaces and snug settings for two to eight people.

Located just one mile off Interstate 79, Exit 91, south on US 19, Hillbilly Haven Log Cabin Rentals is situated on 47 acres, with five cabins nestled in the hollow, and two specialty cabins, Just for Two and Almost Heaven, set on the hillside above.

Those who lodge in the cabins in summer can enjoy the nearby Stonewall Jackson Lake and Stonewall Resort, where visitors have an Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course. Prime fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, and all water sports are available nearby. For persons interested in history, Bulltown Historic Area and Jackson's Mill are nearby.

But for winter, Hillbilly Haven cabins are the perfect place to tuck yourselves in to enjoy a romantic weekend, a winter reunion, or just a quiet place to relax and get some rest. Escape to a place where there are no phones (unless you bring one), and no interruptions; just the fabulous comfort of a country setting.

All of the cabins have a full kitchen and bath, air conditioning, gas fireplace, microwave, satellite television, and a vcr or dvd player. There’s no need to pack cookware, towels or plates and utensils, toaster, coffee maker or even coffee filters. Each cabin comes with these amenities. In fact, you could simply pack a change of clothes and in less than two hours, be tucked away in a place where the world can’t find you.

Cabins 1, 2 and 4 sleep four people comfortably, with two twin beds up the ladder in the loft, and a full bed downstairs. Living and kitchen space is limited however, the television can be seen from both levels and the lofts have plenty of room for kid’s play. Cabin 1 and 2 are set along a man-made pond, that ripples in the wind. Pets are permitted only in Cabin 1.

Cabin 3 will sleep six, with a queen bed downstairs and two full beds up the staircase. Cabin 3 has a private hot tub on the patio, and a two-person whirlpool tub. Also, this cabin has a dishwasher, and washer and dryer - great features if you are planning an extended stay. Cabin 3 is handicapped accessible.

Cabin 5 will also sleep six, with a king-size bed downstairs, and two full beds up the stairs. Cabin 5 has a private hot tub on the deck, and a whirlpool tub in the bathroom. This cabin is the furthest in the hollow, more secluded and private than cabins 1 through 4.

The Just for Two cabin has one full bed, and a private hot tub on the patio overlooking the West Virginia hills. This cabin has prime privacy, and the view alone is calming and comforting. This cabin is great for a writer’s getaway as well, as Just for Two can also be perfect just for one.

The Almost Heaven cabin, on the other hand, is the place for the whole family. With two full beds, two twin beds, and a queen-size water bed, this cabin will sleep eight people comfortably. The eight-person hot tub on the back porch overlooks a well-stocked pond. The cabin has two living rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, and two bathrooms. The downstairs bath has an old-fashioned tub, while the upstairs bath has a shower.

You can bring your own groceries and drinks, or take a short walk through the woods to Midway Mart Convenience Store, stocked with everything you will need including groceries, hot food, drinks, an ATM, West Virginia souvenirs, gifts, novelties, firewood, West Virginia Wine and more.

Or, if you don’t feel like cooking, visit Stillwaters Restaurant at Stonewall Resort - one of the finest restaurants around Gas grills are available for those who are willing to grill out in the cold.

Hillbilly Haven log cabins are perfect for winter board games with the family, strategic card playing with the guys, romantic nookie by the fire with your mate, or even pleasant quiet and solitude taking time for yourself. For Central West Virginia, this nearby haven is a great winter getaway.

Cabins are available starting at $85 for a single night, with discounts available for extended stays. For example, if you stay six nights at this true haven, the seventh night is free. Children under 18 stay free if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Also, if you visit the Hillbilly Haven web site, you will find instructions for getting off season rates, ten percent off the cost of your stay.

Phones are not available in any cabin, however most cell phones will have a signal. Smoking is not permitted inside. Check-in time is 4:00 p.m. However, if the unit is cleaned you may check in earlier if you wish. Quiet hours begin at 10:00 p.m. and check out is 11:00 a.m.

Schedule 30 minutes of time before check out. The cabin owners ask visitors to help "close down" the cabin when they leave. Renters are expected to: turn off all lights and appliances, turn the gas logs down to low, turn the water heater off. In summer the air conditioning must be turned off.

In addition, visitors are asked to strip beds and put sheets and pillow cases on the floor, wash and store all dishes, place trash in the garbage can outside, and make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked. Of course, these requests are for safety, conservation, and the pleasure of future guests.
